Ballast

Scrap zincs

Orion carries a small but noticeable starboard list because of the weight of the shower and heads structure on the starboard side aft of the wheelhouse. Brian had dealt to this with water ballast in two bags under the main cabin bench seats. On the trip down from Napier these started leaking and a damp carpet in the cabin and frequent but short duration activation of the aft pump were the signs.  We emptied and removed them. Now we've been shopping for some discarded zincs which we found at Metal Recyclers in Blenheim— $150 for 200 kgs.

  1. I always thought you could put at least 4 tons of ballast in Orion. Remember the old fuel tank was 5 ton = 5000 ltres. . This was situated about where the work bench and port fuel tank is now.
I never got round to it. In a heavy beam sea she was a bit light. Not to mention she had a 9 ton fish hold capacity.

  2. We agree. Though we don't like to make changes too quickly, we think that's a mistake new owners can make. By my calculations 16 x 5 x .7 = 56 is the approximate waterplane area so 5.6 tonnes will set her down 10 cms and 4 tonnes around 7 cms. That seems about right. The thing that concerns me is where the weight would be. The weight of the fuel and the weight of the ice and fish was distributed with its centre somewhere around or just below the waterline. Introducing weight lower than that will have the effect of lowering the centre of gravity and quickening her roll. I might see if I can find Harold and ask his opinion.
