1969Charles Hufflet came on board at Havelock March 2018 and wrote to us:

Your vessel is indeed the one that a group of us chartered for a cray venture in the Chathams during 1969/1970. She spent two seasons there. Alan Pritchard was both a partner and sometime skipper in the venture.

The practice in those days was for the small fishing vessels to sail from the mainland to the Chathams in convoy. As the “Orion” had a Master Mariner onboard she was not required to do so, but sailed independently. But one time, was in company with a fateful convoy that saw the loss of the “Kia” and “La Paloma”. Sadly this convoy met terrible weather and six lives were lost. The “Orion” arrived first in the Chathams whilst many of the convoy actually sailed past the islands and actually had to be guided back!

After her stint in the Chathams she served as a “mothership” for a paua gathering venture in Fiordland. I do not know of her subsequent commercial history.
